Gravel tires for autumn/winter: which ones to choose for muddy and wet trails?

Autumn and winter drastically transform gravel trails: sticky mud, slippery fallen leaves, puddles… in these conditions, choosing the right gravel tire for cold seasons is essential to ride safely and fully enjoy your outings. this guide will help you select the best tire for muddy and wet terrain.
Why adjust your tires in autumn and winter?
Riding with the same tires in winter as in summer can be dangerous as soon as the ground becomes wet or slippery. here are the main challenges of cold-season riding:
Mud and moisture: the ground becomes slippery, so tires need to evacuate mud quickly to maintain grip.
Cold: harder rubber loses traction, especially on wet roots and rocks.
Hidden obstacles: rocks and roots are harder to spot, and a reinforced casing can help prevent punctures.
Adjusting pressure: slightly lowering tire pressure increases contact with the ground and improves grip.
Which gravel tire tread should you choose?
For muddy trails
If your routes are very muddy:
choose high and widely spaced knobs, including in the center, to maximize grip.
aggressive side knobs ensure better control in turns and when accelerating.
find the right balance of width and pressure: a wider tire slightly deflated increases contact with the ground and reduces slipping.
Recommended width: 42–45mm
Tip: on very thick, slippery mud, a smooth or too-rolling center reduces grip and can make both front and rear wheels slide.
For wet but less muddy trails
For routes that are mainly wet:
Semi-knobby tires are sufficient (smoother in the center if you also ride a lot on roads or smooth gravel, which helps maintain speed).
the center remains rolling, but the shoulders should grip well in turns.
Recommended width: 38–42mm
Tip: wider tires allow you to lower pressure for better grip on slippery terrain, but make sure your frame and fork can accommodate the width.
Recommended tire pressure
Very muddy trails: 1.8–2.0 bar for 42–45mm tires
Typical wet trails: 2.0–2.3 bar for 38–42mm tires
Tip: each rider’s weight and terrain type may require slight adjustments.

Tubeless: why it’s practical
Tubeless (without inner tube) is especially useful in winter:
you can ride at lower pressure without puncturing.
better grip on wet roots and rocks.
fewer punctures thanks to the sealant.
Tip: use a sealant that stays fluid in cold weather.
Rubber and casing
Soft rubber: maintains grip even when it’s cold.
Reinforced casing: useful if you ride on very technical trails or do bikepacking.
