Our must-sees to visit the Basque Country

We all picture the postcard-perfect landscapes and legendary gastronomy of the Basque Country — but where should you start to explore this charming corner of southwestern France? Iconic spots, picturesque villages, or unspoiled beaches… In this article, we’ve gathered the must-see places in the Basque Country to help you soak up its unique character and timeless charm.

The Basque Corniche

If there’s one place to add to your Basque Country bucket list, it’s the Basque Corniche, stretching from Ciboure to Hendaye. This natural site runs along some of the region’s most spectacular cliffs, alternating between breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and timeless gems like the Abbadia Observatory Castle or Pointe Sainte-Anne in Urrugne.
At certain times of the year, the luckiest visitors might even spot the giant Belharra wave, tamed only by the world’s most experienced surfers.

La Rhune

Head for La Rhune, perhaps the most legendary peak in the Pyrenees range, rising 905 meters above sea level. To experience it fully, hop aboard the historic cogwheel train, and take in the ever-changing scenery of forests, gorges, and mountain peat bogs.
At the top, a spectacular view of the Basque treasures awaits. Feeling sporty? Some sections can be explored on foot… or on a gravel bike.

Biarritz and its surroundings

Can you really say you’ve been to the Basque Country without stopping in Biarritz? Famous for its surf culture, this seaside town has much more to offer.
Among the must-sees: the walk to the Rocher de la Vierge, the aquarium, the impressive neo-medieval Villa Belza, the Biarritz lighthouse on Pointe Saint-Martin, and the Port des Pêcheurs, one of the city’s most iconic districts.

Anglet

Nicknamed Little California for its lifestyle and surf culture, Anglet has a personality all its own, where nature reigns supreme. With its 230 hectares of pine forests and 4.5 km of preserved sandy coastline, Anglet offers a stunning contrast of landscapes that will make you want to come back again and again.
Breathe in the sea air along the coastal promenade, immerse yourself in the area’s Basque and Gascon influences, or visit the Izadia Ecological Park, one of the last natural dune habitats on the coast.

Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port

To taste one of the best Basque cakes in the region, head to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, a charming village nestled at the foot of the Roncevaux Pass near the Spanish border.
Known as a major stop on the Camino de Santiago, this fortified town reveals its secrets through its ramparts, the Saint-Jacques Gate, and the Citadel Street walked by countless pilgrims. End your day with an introduction to Basque pelota, a local tradition that’s as vibrant as ever.

Saint-Jean-de-Luz

A favorite summer destination, Saint-Jean-de-Luz invites visitors to experience the Basque Country’s gentle rhythm between ocean and mountains. Its maze of pedestrian streets lined with colorful houses, its picturesque fishing port, and its Grande Plage make it a must-see.
The team’s favorite? The Sainte-Barbe Hill, crossed by the coastal path, offering a stunning view of the Fort Socoa, built in the 17th century to protect the bay.

Bayonne

Known worldwide for its delicious ham and famous festivals, Bayonne, the capital of the Northern Basque Country, is full of hidden gems.
To savor its culinary side, visit the local market halls every Saturday morning, facing the Nive River.
For sightseeing, don’t miss the Place de la Plachotte, the gothic cloister of Sainte-Marie Cathedral, the medieval streets and ramparts, or the charming arcades of Rue Port-Neuf leading to the Quai Amiral Antoine Sala.

Espelette

Lovers of the famous Espelette pepper will be delighted by this typical village of the Basque hinterland. While the fiery red pepper takes center stage, it’s just as enjoyable to stroll through the streets, admire the traditional Basque architecture, and browse local artisan shops and producers.
